In the recent attack chain outlined by NCC Group, compromised websites host malicious installer files posing as legitimate utilities, facilitating Carbanak deployment. Originating in 2014, Carbanak, initially a banking malware associated with the FIN7 cybercrime syndicate, is known for data exfiltration and remote control features. Cybersecurity firm NCC Group revealed in a November 2023 analysis that Carbanak has adapted, utilizing new distribution chains and compromised websites to impersonate business-related software like HubSpot, Veeam, and Xero. Carbanak, a notorious banking malware, has resurfaced with updated tactics, now incorporating ransomware attacks. ![]()
